Sentinel-2 Working Group

The active members of the WG have completed their retrospective collection and processing of values for NDMI and NDVI for 2018. These have been processed as a uniform set of graphs by Mathias Broch and should serve as a guide to the interactive use of S-2 data for 2022. Past reports by Mathias Broch and Rog Palmer in AARGnews outline the scope of the WG.

The purpose of the WG was to examine whether Sentinel 2 could indicate when was a good time to fly in anticipation of recording summer crop marks and to avoid the cost of a preliminary flight to check if the crops were “right”. The results offer two methods of doing this – look at the RGB images and make up your mind or use the NDVI curve to estimate more scientifically – and they have been written up for intended publication. However, some reviewers (mostly members of the WG) asked whether the group achieved what it set out to do. It remains to be seen whether the report can be satisfactorily completed and then whether anyone wants to publish it. A continuation of the S2 project has been included in Simon Seyfrieds’s research (his New Approaches in Cropmarkology poster had been given the Early Career Award at AARG 2023).

Other than (possible) work on the publication the WG is closed.
